Important Bird Areas

Pennsylvania’s Important Bird Area (IBA) Program is part of a dynamic worldwide effort to identify and protect outstanding habitats for birds and all wildlife.  Based on strict scientific criteria two areas in Clarion County and one in nearby Jefferson County were selected in 1998:  Piney Tract (Mt. Zion), Cook Forest State Park and the Callen Run Research Area of Clear Creek State Forest.  SRAS has formally adopted these IBA’s and will monitor and endeavor to protect their habitats.  Click here for more information on birdwatching at these locations and directions on how to reach them.

Bluebird Boxes

Seneca Rocks members build Bluebird nest boxes each year to encourage the local Eastern Bluebird population. Boxes are donated to Beaver Creek Nature Area and to local conservation groups. Seneca Rocks also sells boxes as a fund raiser. Boxes are stocked each year and available for $7 at the National Wildlife Week display at the Clarion Mall in April and by contacting Deb Freed.

Beaver Creek Nature Area

Beaver Creek Nature Area is a free local wetland sanctuary located west of Knox along route 208. Situated in a green valley, the 800 acres include 13 ponds. After purchasing the land in 1980, the Alliance for Wetlands and Wildlife began developing the facility in partnership with several local, state and federal groups. Restrooms, a picnic pavilion, stocked ponds, nature trails and a viewing platform are available for visitors. Educational programming can be scheduled in the education center.

As part of the nationally designated week in April, Seneca Rocks joins the Clarion County Federation of Sportsmen and other conservation groups for a three day display at the Clarion Mall. Seneca Rocks shares information about the local chapter and sells Bluebird nest boxes along with an assortment of birding gear and environmentally friendly items. Members answer questions about bird identification, feeding and habitats that attract birds as well as favorite birding locations.
